The Functional Approach increases the safety and effectiveness of your practice and teaching, and makes your teaching inclusive and accessible. It focuses on obtaining the desired effect rather than any particular outward appearance. An apparent revolution in the modern American Yoga scene, the Functional Approach is in fact simply a return to Yoga’s introspective roots - an attention to what we feel, and the underlying intention of the practice. Key to teaching from a functional perspective is an understanding of fundamental anatomical principles. Learn to more effectively observe your students, and create a dialogue to guide a student’s exploration rather than making any pose into a destination. Far from complicating our practice and teaching, the Functional Approach is elegantly simple, and will forever change your view of Yoga. Empower your Yoga from the inside out! Dive deep into the Functional Approach in a weekend with Matt Eshleman, BA, ERYT500, YACEP.
Saturday 2-8pm Anatomy and Application
To most effectively and safely practice or teach yoga asana, one must understand fundamental principles of anatomy. Enhance body awareness in your asana practice, and gain practical tools for teaching postures and variations. Learn to distinguish different types of resistance to movement and how to address them. Through hands-on testing we will learn to assess yoga postures, exploring the impact of natural differences in our bones. Within our own group we will see an incredible variation of participants’ skeletons and experiences of yoga postures. Rather than a focus on a universal, aesthetic alignment; Individual alignment is as unique as your fingerprint, due to your uniquely shaped bones. A great study for serious practitioners to take a deeper look, and necessary for yoga teachers of any style.
Sunday 9:30am-3:30pm Teaching from a Functional Perspective
Now what? Embracing the realities of skeletal variation means making a shift in how we teach, developing our language to guide a student’s exploration rather than making any pose into a destination. It means returning to the introspective roots of Yoga, and makes our teaching extremely inclusive and accessible. Learn to more effectively observe your students, and create a dialogue to lead them to the safest and most effective expression of their practice. Far from complicating our practice and teaching, the Functional Approach is elegantly simple, and will forever change your view of Yoga.

Matt Eshleman (BA, ERYT500, YACEP) Matt has a strong foundation in science and medicine from graduate studies in Neuropsychology. Parallel study of Eastern wisdom traditions led Matt to pursue teaching yoga as a full-time profession, first studying Ashtanga Vinyasa with Larry Schultz, founder of It’s Yoga, and then Yin Yoga and Functional Anatomy with Paul and Suzee Grilley. Drawing further from Grilley’s teachers Paulie Zink and Dr. Motoyama, Matt integrates these studies into what can best be called Taoist Yoga. Matt is also a practitioner of martial arts, holding the rank of Shodan at Jissenkan Dojo in Cincinnati OH. Balancing martial training with the study of the therapeutic healing arts of Thai Yoga massage, QiGong, and Reiki, Matt brings to his teachings a very practical knowledge of the physical and energetic systems of the body. In 2016, Matt joined the elite ranks of YogaSlackers Teachers, and also enjoys teaching Slackline and AcroYoga. Matt is the director of teacher training at You Do Yoga, a Registered Yoga School offering 200 and 300 Hour certifications and Continuing Education courses, and currently travels the US leading unique educational experiences.
